Due to the various reports i had both heard and read for myself, i have been very resistant to using windows Vista, the DRM properties alone are enough to put many off, thats before the compatability and hardware control issues. Still, i recently read a report suggesting that Vista has had a raw deal and is not anywhere near as bad as the hype.

Well, i recently purchased some new work laptops, i got a great deal on dual cores 1 gig ram, with windows XP, but there was a problem, the lappys had a random conflict between Wlan card and mother board and had to be returned. I was then sent some nice Packard Bell lappys as replacements, but much to my horror they arrived with Vista installed.

Well, i booted mine up and took a look, and what a nice look it was, pretty looking operating sytem, so i thought i would keep an open mind and give it a go.

I began re-installing my software, starting with a few word processor documents and some excel spread sheets i use on a daily basis, the folder moved smoothly from my external HD onto my new sparkly desktop, where i moved them into the "my documents" folder. I then went to delete the temp "bckup files" folder from my desktop, hmmmm its estimating 50mins to delete an empty folder? this is odd. At that point, i decided to reboot and put it down to a glitch, i rebooted, and tried to delete the said folder again, same deal, 50mins, so i let it run and timed it, it finally removed this empty folder in some 22 mins.

So, i wasnt off to the best start, i pushed on, installing next, my accounts package, now we are not talking about anything unusual here, its a well known brand of software commonly used by many businesses small and large. Within moments of hitting the install now button, i knew this was going to be a rough ride. Anyway, after a little messing about, the software installed and i double clicked to open it, the program couldnt launch, a number of errors occured. So i contacted the software support, and spoke to a helpful chap there, that indicated Vista was causing them all sorts of issues, he gave me some simple changes to make, which i did, and the software appeared to work just fine.

After i had opened the software i went to view my accounts, the program shut down instantly, i tried again, same deal, in fact when i tried any function at all it crashed.

Well, after some more time to the companies tech support and some clean reinstalls, i gave up, and little over 2 hours after taking delivery of my first vista computer, i arrived at my local store, where i got a full refund and ordered a new lappy with XP, needless to say, all software installed first time and to date, no issues at all.

I just thought i would share this little experience with you, you can draw your own conclusions, by my advice was and is now even more so, AVOID VISTA!

P.S. My AV would noy install on Vista either.

I kinda like the idea of some of the vista features, plus it does look pretty, but then i figure i would rather my pc moved along quickly than have a pretty looking OS. Damn, im turning into April.... :sad2:

Well, thats not a huge amount of info to go from, but if its just a case of the Windows Firewall blocking Winmx, then you can make an exception in the firewall to allow Winmx.

Start >> Control panel >> Windows firewall >> Exceptions

The controls are pretty self explanatory from there you will need to add Winmx to the exception list.

Post back and let me know how you get on.
