Page Rank is at the heart of googles system, its designed for ranking web pages, developed by the founders of google at Stanford University. The page ranking system continues to be the basis of googles workings even today.

PageRank relies on the democratic nature of the web by using link structure as an indicator of an individual page's worth or 'rank'. In basic terms, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote of confidence, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the simply the number of inbound links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. The more important page A is the more wieght google applies to the link to page B and therefore "better" pages carry more voting power!

Its important then to consider, that high page rank pages are likely to feature more highly in google search results than lower ranked pages; however, Google does not rely on simply page rank alone, it also uses an advanced text reader to verify the content of your website is a match for the information being searched for. High ranking pages with well written content are most likely to feature highly in google search results.

So, you need to avoid the myth, page rank is not the be all and end all of everything as some would have you beleive. Page rank like other things is a factor, you could increase your pagrank but not move any higher in the search engine results!

High page rank does not guarantee more traffic.

Thats right, whilst i do beleive Google page rank is a factor in search engine results, its not a huge factor, there are certainly millions of examples of lower pagerank sites that out rank high pr sites.
